Benefits of the 37 Compounds Found in the Avocado Leaf

Avocados are known for their healthy fats and high fiber content. But did you know that the leaves of avocados also offer a wide range of benefits?

Avocado leaves contain phytochemicals, antioxidants, and vitamins that may help to improve your health. In this article, we'll explore these health benefits and discusses the phytochemical and antioxidant activity of Persea americana Mill. (Avocado Leaf Extract).

The Health Benefits of Avocado Leaves

Avocado leaves are a great source of phytochemicals and antioxidants. These two compounds have been shown to have a variety of health benefits, including protecting the body from oxidative stress and boosting the immune system.

Phytochemicals are plant-based chemicals that have been shown to have antioxidant activity, meaning they protect the body from oxidative stress (1). Oxidative stress occurs when there is an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and antioxidant defenses within cells. ROS are molecules that contain oxygen and are highly reactive to other molecules in your body. For example, when you breathe in air pollution or smoke, the ROS produced by these pollutants can damage cells in your lungs or even cause cancer. When you drink avocado tea extract, you can get protection from oxidative stress by consuming phytochemicals such as flavonoids and polyphenols (2).

Antioxidants are substances that help prevent or reduce oxidative damage to cells by neutralizing free radicals before they can cause harm to your body's tissues and organs.

Avocado leaves are rich in antioxidant compounds that can protect the body from free radical damage and reduce the risk of disease.

The leaves of the avocado tree (Persea americana Mill.) have been used to treat a variety of diseases, including cancer, diabetes, arthritis, lupus, and more (3). These benefits are thought to be due to their high levels of phytochemicals, which may help to prevent oxidative stress in the body.

A Study on Persea americana Mill. For its Phytochemical and Antioxidant Activity

The avocado leaf is a plant that has been used for centuries in traditional medicine. It is known to have several health benefits such as reducing inflammation and improving blood circulation, which may help reduce the risk of heart disease. In addition, avocado leaves are rich in antioxidants such as flavonoids and tannins, which help protect against oxidative stress.

However, there has not been much research on the phytochemical content and antioxidant power of avocado leaves.

Therefore, this study aimed to identify and analyze the phytochemical content and antioxidant power of avocado leaf extract, which may meet the need for antioxidants in people with degenerative diseases.

In this study, scientists analyzed the phytochemical content and antioxidant power of avocado leaf extract using different methods including the DPPH assay (1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) method on avocado leaf extract and vitamin C (control group). The results showed that positive avocado leaf extract contains flavonoids, saponins, tannins, and steroids.

The study on avocado leaf extract found that it had a strong antioxidant effect with a DPPH absorbance value of 0.797 and an IC50 of 72.61 mg L–1. This shows that avocado leaf extract is more effective than vitamin C as a positive control for its antioxidant activity.

Conclusion

The phytochemical components found in avocado leaf extract have a powerful antioxidant that may be utilized to both avoid oxidative stress and help the body deal with it when it occurs.

The phenolic analysis of this plant material allowed the identification of at least thirty-seven bioactive compounds (phenolic acids and flavonoids mainly), which may have application in the medicine field.

The various antioxidants present, combined with the phytochemicals in avocado leaves, make them a potentially valuable resource for preventing oxidative stress, as well as treating it.
