New Study Examines Avocado Seed Extract and Male Fertility

New Research Suggests Avocado Seed Extract May Support Male Fertility

The avocado tree continues to surprise researchers.

A recently published 2026 study examined the effects of avocado seed extract on male fertility in laboratory rats. While avocados are often celebrated for their healthy fats and nutritional value, this research focused on a lesser-known part of the plant: the seed.

Researchers investigated whether compounds found in avocado seed extract could influence sperm production and overall reproductive health. The findings were intriguing.

What Did Researchers Study?

The study, titled Persea americana Mill (Lauraceae) Seed Extract Effect on Male Rat Fertility: Sperm Quality and Histomorphological Safety Assessment, evaluated the effects of avocado seed extract on 40 male rats over a 28-day period.

The animals were divided into four groups:

  • One control group that received no treatment
  • Three groups receiving varying doses of avocado seed extract

Researchers then analyzed:

  • Sperm count
  • Sperm motility (movement)
  • Sperm morphology (structure)
  • Testicular health
  • Liver, kidney, and brain tissue

The goal was to determine whether avocado seed extract influenced fertility-related markers while also assessing overall safety.

What Were the Results?

The researchers observed a dose-dependent increase in several important fertility markers.

Compared to the control group, rats receiving avocado seed extract demonstrated:

Increased Sperm Count

Higher doses of the extract were associated with increased sperm production. This suggests the extract may have stimulated spermatogenesis, the biological process responsible for producing sperm cells.

Improved Sperm Motility

Sperm motility refers to how effectively sperm move. Healthy movement is considered an important factor in fertility because sperm must travel efficiently to reach and fertilize an egg.

The study found improvements in sperm motility among treated animals.

Enhanced Testicular Function

Researchers concluded that avocado seed extract may support overall testicular function and sperm production based on the observed changes.

What About Safety?

One of the most interesting findings was that researchers reported no significant harmful changes in the testes, brain, kidneys, or most liver evaluations during the study.

The authors did observe some liver congestion in certain reversibility groups, which highlights the importance of continued research and careful evaluation.

Overall, however, the researchers concluded that avocado seed extract appeared relatively well tolerated during the study period.

What Does This Mean?

It's important to remember that this was an animal study, not a human clinical trial.

Animal studies help scientists identify promising areas for future investigation, but they do not prove that the same effects will occur in people.

Still, these findings add to a growing body of research exploring the unique plant compounds found throughout the avocado tree.

The researchers ultimately suggested that avocado seed extract may warrant further investigation as a potential aid for conditions associated with reduced sperm count or motility.

The Bigger Picture

Most people think of avocados simply as a nutritious fruit. However, scientists continue to discover biologically active compounds throughout the entire avocado plant, including the fruit, leaves, and seeds.

As research continues, we may gain a deeper understanding of how these natural compounds interact with the body and contribute to overall wellness.

Nature often holds remarkable surprises, and the avocado tree may be one of them.
